The point of the 5WWC petition is two-fold:
   • As a means to generate grassroots action. A first step in response to what can I do?
   • As a means of showing the UN that there is widespread global support when the
          UN CSW and ECOSOC meets in 2009.

There is new energy for the 5WWC petition effort. Let’s get as many signatures as possible between now and 2009 when the Economic and Social Council meets (20 April to 1 May, 2009). Discussion on a 5th UN World Conference on Women has been tabled until then. Support from ECOSOC irequired for there to be a UN 5th World Conference on Women. Therefore, we are once again providing a link to the original online petition effort and making available once again the translated petitions.

The Petition

TO: United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and the U.N. Secretary-General

STATEMENT: The last world women's conference in Beijing 1995 drew 50,000 participants. Now at the beginning of the 21st century, with the state of the world as it is, it is a crucial time for women to come together to make a difference. This conference would be the first since the Internet made worldwide communication easy, and would likely be the largest and most effective gathering of women ever held.

PURPOSE: To show worldwide grassroots support for a United Nations sponsored 5th Women's World Conference
